Ben’s Fish and Chip Shop in Mevagissey, Cornwall

Learn about Ben’s third fish and chip shop, and restaurant in Cornwall – ‘Ben’s Mevagissey.’

About Us

Ben’s Mevagissey is a family business. It is our third exciting adventure, after the success of our award-winning ‘Ben’s Plaice Looe’, and our popular ‘Ben’s Plaice’ in Millbrook. This time, we have the exciting combination of a takeaway and a 60-cover restaurant, set in a beautiful Cornish fishing village.

Ben’s Fish and Chip Shops

Ben’s is a family run business. Towards the end of 2021, after the sad demise of an old chip shop in Looe, myself and a family member followed our dreams, signed on the dotted line, and worked tirelessly to give it a new lease of life. Little did we know that this would be the first successful fish and chip business in our portfolio.

‘Ben’s Plaice Looe’ is now a well-known, award-winning takeaway, attracting tourists and locals all year round. Following our success, and after being awarded first place as the Best Fish and Chip Shop in Cornwall 2023, we opened our second takeaway, ‘Bens Plaice Millbrook.’ Here, we serve the local residents and tourists from the surrounding areas and have, again, built up a strong regular customer base due to the quality and variety of food on offer.

Facts About the History of the Building

In March 2024, we took the decision to expand further. Searching for the ideal venue, with a view to opening not only another takeaway, but also incorporating a restaurant, has enabled us to broaden our horizons. After much contemplating, we discovered the old ‘Central Café’ in Mevagissey.  This listed building is steeped in history, having been bought in the 1920s by Eli Nathaniel Cloak, then subsequently passed to his son, Philip James Cloak – who was born under the table during WW2. On Christmas Day 2007, Philip passed away, leaving the legacy to his children. The cafe had been serving fish and chips for 100 years.

Now known as Ben’s Mevagissey, we have transformed the building into a modern takeaway/restaurant, with fantastic customer service, serving great food, 7 days a week!
